Wichita State moves up to No. 9 in AP poll; KU drops to No. 11

Wichita State is back in the top 10 of the Associated Press men’s basketball poll.

The Shockers (3-0) moved up to two spots to No. 9 in Monday’s poll, receiving 1,120 from media members. WSU started the season No. 11. WSU is No. 10 in the coaches poll administered by USA Today.

Kansas dropped six spots to No. 11 after a 72-40 loss to No. 1 Kentucky. The Jayhawks are No. 12 in the coaches poll. Kansas State received two votes in the coaches poll.

Northern Iowa received 17 points in the AP poll. Creighton debuted at No. 23 after defeating No. 18 Oklahoma last week.

WSU ended the 2013-14 regular season No. 2 in the final AP poll after spending 13 weeks in the top 10. Its run of 23 straight weeks in the AP poll, dating to last season’s preseason poll, is a program best. The Shockers appeared in 20 straight polls during the 1963-64 and 1964-65 seasons.

The Shockers play Tulsa at 2 p.m. Saturday at Koch Arena.

Baker honored by Valley — Wichita State junior guard Ron Baker earned Missouri Valley Conference player of the week honors after helping the Shockers defeat Memphis and Newman.

Baker, from Scott City, averaged 19.5 points, 4.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds in the two games. He made 6 of 12 three-pointers and 12 of 24 shots. Tuesday, he scored 21 points and handed out six assists in WSU’s 71-56 win over Memphis in Sioux Falls, S.D.

It is his third weekly honor from the MVC.

Illinois State junior DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell earned newcomer of the week honors. He averaged 16 points in wins over Weber State and Old Dominion.
