Cotton on the bench
Wichita State senior Tekele Cotton sat out Sunday’s game as a precautionary measure. Coach Gregg Marshall saw no need to risk his tender ring finger against Newman.
Cotton jammed the finger before the Memphis game and played with his right hand wrapped on Tuesday in Sioux Falls, S.D. It didn’t keep him from playing well against the Tigers. Cotton hasn’t practiced since the Memphis game and will likely sit out until Friday, Marshall said.
“Then it will be like eight or nine days without any stress on that joint,” Marshall said. “He could have played. We elected to sit him. Hopefully, he’ll be more like 100 percent against Tulsa.”
Redshirt freshman Shaq Morris made his first start in place of Cotton. Cotton had not missed a game since his freshman season. He played in all 39 in 2012-13 and started all 36 last season.
D stands for something
Former Shocker Toure Murry is making the most of his time in the NBA Developmental League. Murry, sent down by the Utah Jazz earlier this month, is averaging 14.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 3.0 steals in four games for the Idaho Stampede.
He scored 22 points in Friday’s 118-110 win over the Los Angeles D-Fenders, also grabbing 10 rebounds and handing out five assists.
Worth noting
WSU paid Newman $8,000, plus 50 tickets, for Sunday’s game … WSU’s 67-point half ranks in a tie for fourth, equaling a 1988 effort against Bradley. No. 1 is a 70-point half against Texas-Pan American (1982), followed by 69 vs. Utah State (1966) and 68 vs. Oklahoma City (1961) … WSU racked 100 points for the first time since a 102-53 win over Newman on Dec. 19, 2011.
