Illinois State sweeps WSU; Shockers seeded third at MVC volleyball tournament
Illinois State completed a perfect run through Missouri Valley Conference volleyball with a sweep of Wichita State on Saturday at Redbird Arena.
The loss dropped WSU (19-9, 13-5 MVC) into third place in the MVC. The third-seeded Shockers will start the conference tournament with a 7:30 p.m. match on Thursday against sixth-seeded Indiana State in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
The Redbirds (24-5, 18-0) won their 20th straight match (25-14, 27-25, 25-21) to become the first Valley team to go 18-0 in conference play since Northern Iowa in 2011. Illinois State, which won its first MVC title since 1997, is the top seed in the conference tournament. UNI is second. Both teams earned a bye into Friday’s semifinals.
UNI will play the winner of WSU vs. Indiana State. Illinois State awaits the winner of No. 4 Missouri State vs. No. 5 Southern Illinois.
MaryAshton Floyd led WSU with 11 kills and Katie Reilly added 10. Dani Mostrom recorded 29 kills, a career-high for her in a three-set match.
