Wichita State rosters set for baseball scrimmage series
Wichita State announced its rosters for its fall scrimmage series, featuring what appears to be a significant pitching imbalance.
The Gold team landed starters Willie Schwanke and Sam Tewes, both of whom spent time as WSU’s top starter last season and are good bets to fill weekend spots again in the spring. Closer John Hayes resides in the Gold bullpen.
Rosters are decided by a draft, but pitchers were selected, in different rounds, from a pool of pitchers available on a certain day according to their workout schedule, pitching coach Brent Kemnitz said.
In August, Kemnitz set up a schedule with Schwanke and Tewes throwing on different days throughout fall practices. The schedule stayed true, so Schwanke and Tewes were slotted in different pools and Gold was able to grab both in different rounds.
Black isn’t bereft of pitching talent. It got Chase Williams, who ended last season in the weekend rotation, and Cody Tyler.
The best-of-5 series begins at 6 p.m., Thursday. All games are seven innings.
The series continues on Sunday (6 p.m.), Oct. 20 (2:30 p.m.), Oct. 22 (6 p.m.) and Oct. 23 (6 p.m.). Admission to each scrimmage is can of food for the Kansas Food Bank.
