Wichita State volleyball sweeps Northern Iowa

Wichita State volleyball ended a four-match losing streak to Northern Iowa with a sweep on Friday in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Freshman outside hitter Shimen Fayad led WSU with 18 kills and a season-high attack percentage of .444. She also added three aces and seven digs. Middle Abbie Lehman recorded 11 kills, with one error, on 20 swings. Setter Emily Hiebert had 31 assists and 11 digs. Libero Dani Mostrom had 18 digs.

WSU (13-6, 4-1 Missouri Valley Conference) finished with an attack percentage of .242 while winning 25-22, 25-23, 25-22. The Shockers kept pace with Missouri State and Loyola atop the MVC standings. Missouri State swept at Drake and plays Northern Iowa on Saturday. Loyola swept defending MVC champion Illinois State at home.

WSU plays at Drake at 7 p.m., Saturday.

UNI (9-10, 3-3) lost its third straight match. Amie Held led the Panthers with 13 kills.

Fayad sparked the deciding run in the first set. Her kill gave WSU a 19-16 lead and three aces during her serving run put the Shockers up 24-18. MaryAshton Floyd ended the set with a kill.

In the second set, the Shockers blew leads 18-13 and 22-17. UNI’s 6-0 run gave it a 23-22 lead before Lehman’s kill tied the set. Fayad’s kill gave WSU a 24-23 lead and WSU won the set on UNI’s attack error.

The Panthers took a 22-21 lead in the third set on a kill by Kayla Haneline. Mikaela Raudsepp tied the set with a kill and WSU went ahead on a Panthers attack error and a kill by Fayad. An attack error by UNI’s Bri Weber gave the match to the Shockers.
