Wichita State volleyball sweeps Evansville

Wichita State’s volleyball team hit a blazing .383 to sweep Evansville 25-16, 25-16, 15-15 on Monday in Evansville, Ind..

The Shockers (12-6, 3-1 Missouri Valley Conference) converted 48 kills on 94 swings with 12 errors, totaling their third-highest attack percentage of the season. They held Evansville (7-12, 1-4) to an .085 attack percentage, second-lowest by a WSU opponent.

WSU middle Abbie Lehman had 10 kills and outside hitters Mikaela Raudsepp and Shimen Fayad both added eight. MaryAshton Floyd contributed six kills, eight digs and three assists. Libero Dani Mostrom had 12 digs and setter Emily Hiebert recorded seven kills and 33 assists.

WSU’s eight blocks doubled the Aces.

Evansville’s Stephanie Cerino had 10 kills. WSU held Genesis Miranda, who averages 4.24 kills a set, to seven kills and a minus-074 attack percentage, with nine errors.

The Shockers continue their road-swing at Northern Iowa on Friday.

Five MVC teams in top 100 — Wichita State is No. 64 in the NCAA’s power ranking (RPI) released on Monday.

Missouri State is the top MVC school at No. 22. WSU is next, followed by No. 66 Southern Illinois, No. 76 Northern Iowa, No. 77 Illinois State, No. 85 Loyola, No. 129 Indiana State, No. 176 Drake, No. 267 Evansville and No. 276 Bradley.

The Shockers own wins over No. 18 Kentucky and No. 25 Marquette. All six of WSU’s losses are against teams ranked in the top 100, including Missouri State, No. 21 Illinois, No. 36 Hawaii and No. 38 Texas A&M.

Shockers freshman honored — Fayad was named MVC freshman of the week after she recorded a career-high 20 kills in Friday’s 3-1 loss to Missouri State at Koch Arena.

Fayad, from Victoria, British Columbia, hit .261 and added five digs. She is the first WSU freshman with 20 or more kills since Lindsey Eckenrode with 22 against Northern Iowa in 2006.
