Wichita State’s Abby Stevens wins MVC title at No. 1 singles
Wichita State’s Abby Stevens became the first Shocker tennis player to win consecutive No. 1 singles titles in the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships since 1985.
Stevens, from Kapaun Mount Carmel, defeated Illinois State’s Marcia Tere-Apisah 6-4, 6-2 on Sunday in Springfield, Ill. The Shockers won two other singles titles, all while nationally ranked Julia Schiller and Gabriela Porubin played in the ITA All-American Championships in California.
WSU’s Sandy Sadler won four Gateway Conference, the forerunner to women’s competition in the MVC, from 1982-85. Stevens is the sixth MVC tennis player to win consecutive No. 1 titles.
WSU’s Tanaporn Thongsing won the No. 3 flight with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Drake’s Summer Brills. Luca Pump won No. 4 singles, defeating Illinois State’s Chanel Scudiero 6-1, 6-1. Guilia Guidetti (No. 2) and Whitney Quan (No. 6) finished second. WSU also had a runner-up finish at No. 2 doubles with Pump and Thongsing.
