Wichita State volleyball falls to IUPUI, beats Albany

IUPUI upset Wichita State 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 25-17) on Saturday in the Marquette Invitational in Milwaukee.

The Shockers committed 24 attack errors and hit .188. Abbie Lehman led WSU with 16 kills and Katie Reilly added 12. IUPUI (9-4) hit .257, led by Kaitlyn Hickey’s 22 kills.

IUPUI took a 5-1 lead in the fourth set, helped by two attack errors by the Shockers. They tied it 13-all before IUPUI took the lead for good with a 3-0 run that eventually expanded to a 20-15 lead.

Freshman Shimen Fayad had a career-high 13 kills to lead four Shockers in double figures in a 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-17, 25-12) win over Albany in their final match in Milwaukee.

WSU (9-5) built a 14-6 lead on the first set and never trailed. The Shockers led the second set 23-21 but Albany scored four straight to win. In the third set WSU took the lead for good at 9-8, and WSU never trailed in the final set.

Lehman had 12 kills and nine blocks, Jenny Whitledge had 10 kills and 12 digs, and Emily Hiebert had 49 assists and 14 digs in the win over Albany (5-7).

The Shockers begin Missouri Valley Conference play next weekend. WSU will play host to Indiana State at 7 p.m. Friday and Illinois State at 7 p.m. Saturday.
