Wichita State volleyball holds off Marquette 3-2
Wichita State’s volleyball team took advantage of its last chance to grab a marquee non-conference win. The Shockers defeated Marquette 3-2 on Friday in the Marquette Invitational in Milwaukee.
WSU middle Katie Reilly had 20 kills and compiled a .487 attack percentage. Middle Abbie Lehman added 12 kills for the Shockers (8-4). Setter Emily Hiebert recorded six kills, 48 assists and 15 digs.
Taylor Louis led Marquette (6-4) with 26 kills.
WSU broke a 9-all tie in the fifth set on Lehman’s kill and extended the lead to 11-9 on an attack error. A kill by Reilly gave WSU a 13-11 lead. Another kill by Reilly ended the match.
Reilly led WSU with five kills in the first set and Hiebert added three on five swings. In the second set Marquette took leads of 6-1, 13-4 and 20-14 before WSU rallied. It cut the lead to 20-18 on Reilly’s ace before Marquette closed the set on a 5-4 run.
WSU led 16-15 in the third set before taking control with a 4-1 run capped by a kill by Shimen Fayad. After the Golden Eagles rallied to within 21-17, the Shockers ended the set on a 4-1 run to take a 2-1 lead entering the break. Marquette won the fourth set 28-26 after leading 20-17.
The Shockers play IUPUI at 10 a.m. and Albany at 5 p.m., Saturday.
