New Mexico State rallies to defeat Wichita State volleyball 3-2

New Mexico State rallied after losing the first two sets to defeat Wichita State 3-2 (20-25, 23-25, 25-21, 30-28, 15-13) on Friday at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station.

The Shockers (3-2) led 5-2 in the fifth set before falling behind 8-7 and losing 15-13 on an attack error by Shimen Fayad. They also gave up a 24-20 lead in the fourth set when the Aggies (4-1) went on a 5-0 run.

Jody Larson led WSU with 16 kills and Abbie Lehman added 14. Katie Reilly hit .308 with 11 kills. Larson added 13 digs and setter Emily Hiebert handed out 52 assists and had 17 digs.

The Shockers play Texas A&M at noon Saturday.

On Friday morning, Larson recorded 11 kills and MaryAshton Floyd set a career-high with five aces in a 3-0 win over Abilene Christian.

WSU won 25-17, 25-12, 25-21, compiling a .300 attack percentage and .464 in the first set. Abilene Christian (0-4) hit .104.

Lehman added eight kills for WSU and Hiebert handed out 33 assists.

Runners get their start — Wichita State will run against Kansas State and Oral Roberts in the JK Gold Classic at the RAFT Golf Course near Augusta on Saturday.

The girls high school race begins at 8 a.m., followed by college men and women and high school boys.

Admission is $3 per person.

Newman, Friends, Hutchinson Community College, Barton County Community College and Tabor are among the other colleges competing. The high school races include Andover, Andover Central, El Dorado, Maize South, Kapaun Mount Carmel, East, Southeast, Campus and Trinity Academy.
