Wichita State Shockers

Wichita State basketball wins at Charlotte without 2 starters. When will they return?

Down two starters due to injury, the Wichita State men’s basketball team pulled out a 66-58 road win Tuesday night at Charlotte.

Justin Hill (toe) and Harlond Beverly (concussion) have combined to play nearly 60 minutes per game this season for the Shockers, but WSU head coach Paul Mills adjusted his rotation to pick up the team’s second win in American Athletic Conference play.

Hill, who missed a game in December as a precaution for a hamstring injury, once again sat out as a precaution to nurse a sore toe injury that worsened during the team’s 4-day layoff in between games. Beverly, on the other hand, was still in concussion protocol following an elbow to the face that fractured his nose in the second half of the North Texas game last Thursday.

After Tuesday’s win at Charlotte, Mills told The Eagle he expects both players to be back in action for WSU’s next game — a road game at South Florida on Sunday.

Hill is the team’s second-leading scorer with averages of 13.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.3 steals, while Beverly is averaging 9.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.5 steals.

Senior point guard Bijan Cortes and senior forward Ronnie DeGray III replaced Hill and Beverly in the starting lineup against Charlotte, as they joined Xavier Bell, Corey Washington and Quincy Ballard. Hill’s absence also created the opportunity to play freshman point guard Zion Pipkin, who fared well in his career-high 14 minutes off the bench. Cortes and Pipkin combined for seven assists and just one turnover in the 40 minutes without Hill.
