How Shocker basketball coach Paul Mills picked up his second technical of the season
Paul Mills made it through his first season as Wichita State men’s basketball coach without a single technical foul.
He already has two midway through his second year on the sidelines, as Mills was whistled for another technical in the second half of Tuesday’s 68-59 win over Charlotte at Koch Arena.
Mills’ displeasure stemmed from a double-dribble violation called on WSU forward Ronnie DeGray with 4:32 remaining in the game. DeGray picked up his dribble around the free throw line and was pivoting. Then, it appeared Charlotte’s Kylan Blackmon slapped his wrist and DeGray dropped the ball, picked it up and immediately shot it.
The shot missed, but before it even hit the rim, official Ray Natili waved it off and whistled DeGray for the turnover.
While DeGray pleaded his case that his arm was hit, Mills exploded in rage from the sidelines and voiced his displeasure over some of Natili’s prior calls. Natili initially allowed Mills to vent, but when the coach continued to harp on previous missed calls, the referee finally had enough and whistled Mills for his first technical foul at Koch Arena.
Charlotte’s Robert Braswell made both free throws to trim WSU’s lead to 58-51, but the Shockers managed to produce two straight defensive stands and then extended their lead on a Harlond Beverly layup.
Much like Mills’ first technical, which came on the road in a 91-72 loss at DePaul, Tuesday’s technical had little effect on the outcome of the game.
