Son of Royals legend Mike Sweeney, a 2026 recruit, commits to Wichita State baseball
The son of Kansas City Royals legend Mike Sweeney will suit up for the Wichita State baseball team in 2026.
M.J. Sweeney, a highly touted prospect who was originally committed to Texas out of high school, gave a verbal commitment to WSU head coach Brian Green on Thursday.
And yes, he plays first base just like his father, which will be a position of need for the Shockers entering the 2026 season following the graduations of Josh Livingston and Ryan Callahan. The biggest difference? M.J. Sweeney stands 6-foot-8 and 240 pounds.
“Can’t wait to be a part of this special program!” Sweeney posted on social media in his announcement.
Sweeney, who was rated as a top-500 prospect in his high school class of 2023, ended up playing his freshman season at Grossmont College, a community college near the San Diego, California area, where he attended high school.
Sweeney hit .377 this past season with 10 home runs, 41 RBIs, 27 extra-base hits and a .754 slugging percentage.
He followed that up with an impressive performance in the Northwoods League, an elite college baseball developmental league in the summer, where Sweeney hit .312 with 10 home runs, 40 RBIs and a .991 on-base plus slugging in 37 games.
