When and where Wichita State basketball will play Iowa in ‘secret’ scrimmage next month
Before Paul Mills makes his debut at Koch Arena, the Wichita State men’s basketball team will receive quite the litmus test.
The Shockers have agreed to play Iowa in a closed-door scrimmage at a neutral site in Omaha on Sunday, Oct. 22, a source with knowledge of the situation told The Eagle.
After playing Missouri State in its “secret” scrimmage last year, scheduling the Hawkeyes is a return to playing power-conference opponents for the preseason tune-up.
WSU has played Texas Tech (2021), Nebraska (2019) and Oklahoma State (2018) in recent seasons.
Led by veteran coach Fran McCaffery, the Hawkeyes are coming off a 19-win season and an NCAA Tournament appearance. They figure to once again be in consideration for March Madness this season with a strong core returning in Tony Perkins, Payton Sandford and Connor McCaffery.
That trio of players averaged better than 32 points last season. Iowa has also added center Ben Krikke, a graduate transfer from Valparaiso who led the Missouri Valley in scoring at 19 points per game.
