Bet on yourself: Fred VanVleet signs NBA record $130 million contract with Houston Rockets
The former Shocker who popularized the phrase “bet on yourself” just received the largest payday in NBA history for an undrafted player.
Fred VanVleet has reportedly agreed to sign a three-year, $130-million contract with the Houston Rockets, according to multiple reports on Friday evening.
VanVleet rose to prominence with the Toronto Raptors’ organization, winning a G League championship, then an NBA championship before becoming an All Star. He is coming off a season where he averaged 19.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists while posting a career-best 117 offensive rating.
Now he will leave the only place he has called home in his professional career at the age of 29, still in his prime, to join a rebuilding Rockets organization looking for veteran leadership.
VanVleet averaged a career-best 20.3 points in the 2021-22 season, when he earned All-Star recognition, and has been a reliable three-point shooter in his career. He averaged 14 points off the bench in the NBA Finals to help the Raptors win the 2019 NBA championship, then has been Toronto’s starting point guard ever since.
Since an All-American career at Wichita State from 2012-16, VanVleet is leaving little doubt as the most accomplished former Shocker in the NBA. VanVleet is confirmed to return to Wichita next part for the 10-year reunion for the 2013 Final Four run during TBT week at Koch Arena.
