Shocker transfer heats up to lead Wichita State women’s basketball to first AAC road win
Ambah Kowcun is starting to find her groove for the Wichita State women’s basketball team.
After a slow start to the season, the Australia native continued her emergence in Saturday’s 69-50 win over Cincinnati at Fifth Third Arena.
Kowcun’s career-high 22 points, which included five three-pointers, helped WSU (13-8, 3-5 AAC) register its first road win in American Athletic Conference play and complete the season sweep over Cincinnati (7-13, 0-7 AAC).
Kowcun came to WSU billed as a sharpshooter following a junior-college career at North Dakota State College of Science, but she dealt with a nagging injury and scored just 10 total points in the first 13 games of the season. Kowcun has flourished in her last four games, averaging 13.3 points and becoming a fixture in WSU’s starting lineup.
She had missed WSU’s last three games due to injury but made a triumphant return on Saturday and helped the Shockers flip the game in the third quarter.
With WSU clinging to a 27-25 lead early in the third quarter, the Shockers proceeded to outscore Cincinnati 22-6 over the next 10 minutes to open up a 49-31 lead. Kowcun scored 10 points during the rally, which allowed WSU to cruise to victory in the fourth quarter.
Joining Kowcun with a career performance was senior center Jane Asinde, who scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for WSU.
The Shockers will be on the road again on Wednesday at Temple, then return home to face Memphis at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4.
