A familiar face is returning to the Wichita State men’s basketball roster for the 2022-23 season.

Isaiah Poor Bear-Chandler, who played three years for the Shockers from 2018-21 but spent last season at Nebraska Omaha, announced on social media Thursday that he is planning on returning to Wichita State to finish his college basketball career. The Eagle confirmed the addition of Poor Bear-Chandler as a walk-on with the program.

“Nearly a year ago, I made the difficult decision to leave Wichita State,” Poor Bear-Chandler, who played high school basketball in Omaha, wrote on social media. “I made this decision for various reasons, the biggest being that I wanted to be closer to my family in Omaha. However, over this past year, I grew to miss the love and support from a community that had grown to be my chosen family. With that being said, I am excited to announce that I will be returning to Wichita State University to pursue the remainder of my basketball career.”

Poor Bear-Chandler, a 6-foot-9 center, averaged 3.0 points and 2.3 rebounds in 12.1 minutes per game during the Shockers’ American Athletic Conference championship run in 2020-21. For his career, he averaged 2.5 points and 2.1 rebounds in 72 career games from 2018-21.

He was expecting to play a much larger role by transferring to Omaha, but a significant ankle injury sidelined him after just three games. Poor Bear-Chandler started all three games and averaged 7.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 22.3 minutes.

WSU coach Isaac Brown and his coaching staff still have one scholarship remaining following their recruiting flurry in the spring. The addition of Poor Bear-Chandler gives WSU a veteran presence who has experience in the WSU system who can help push sophomore returner Kenny Pohto, Alabama transfer James Rojas and Florida State transfer Quincy Ballard in practice.
