What to know about Sarah Adams, Wichita State Shockers’ interim athletic director
Following the firing of Wichita State athletic director Darron Boatright on Wednesday, the university has made Sarah Adams the interim athletic director.
Adams joined the WSU athletic department last summer as the senior associate athletic director and senior women’s administrator. In her role, she oversaw the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as the compliance, academic support services and sports medicine departments.
Those who have worked with Adams at WSU for the past year describe her as meticulous and measured.
“I am confident that (Adams) will provide us with the leadership, stability and compassion needed during the transition,” university president Rick Muma said in a press release.
Adams is the second woman to lead the WSU athletic department, following Darlene Bailey, who also served as AD on an interim basis for a five-month stint in 1993.
Adams brings with her a wealth of administration experience, rising as a compliance coordinator to her current position. Adams came to WSU from Eastern Washington, where she was hired as the senior associate AD and senior women’s administrator for a year beginning in 2018 and then promoted to deputy athletic director in December 2019 until leaving for WSU.
Adams also spent a decade at Northern Colorado, beginning as the associate AD for compliance and working her way up into an associate AD and senior women’s administrator role from 2014-18. She also had stops at New Mexico and Weber State, where she worked as a compliance coordinator.
She earned an undergraduate degree in Sports Management from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 2001 and was also a student-athlete on the women’s golf team. She earned her Master’s degree in Sport Administration from Xavier University in 2004.
