Report: Battle 4 Atlantis has a new location and ‘small number’ of WSU fans allowed
Were you planning on a trip to the Bahamas in November to watch the Wichita State men’s basketball team in the Battle 4 Atlantis?
Well, you may have to trade in your sunscreen and swimming gear for gloves and a coat, but there’s still a chance to watch the Shockers play in the marquee November tournament in college basketball.
According to a report from CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein Monday, the Battle 4 Atlantis will be played at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota with a “small number of fans” allowed as long as social-distancing protocols are followed. WSU officials could not confirm Rothstein’s report but did confirm the tournament will not be in the Bahamas.
Dates for the tournament remain undecided, as Atlantis officials may be waiting for the outcome of Wednesday’s Division I Council meeting that will reportedly determine whether to delay the start of the college basketball season until Nov. 21. The tournament was originally scheduled to be played Nov. 25-27.
Regardless of which side of the bracket, which has yet to be released, Wichita State falls on, the matchups promise to be intriguing. The field also features Duke, Ohio State, Creighton, West Virginia, Memphis, Texas A&M and Utah.
And if the Pentagon sounds familiar to WSU fans, that’s because the Shockers have played there relatively recently. On Nov. 18, 2014, the 11th-ranked Shockers defeated Memphis, 71-56, behind 36 combined points from Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet.
