Wichita State basketball recruiting big board: more than 30 targets in 2021, 2022

This has been a busy week in the world of college basketball recruiting, as Monday kicked off the first full day that Division I coaches could speak directly to recruits in the class of 2022.

The Wichita State men’s basketball coaching staff wasted no time, extending more than a dozen scholarship offers in the first two days alone and making even more phone calls to recruits across the country.

For its next recruiting class, Wichita State is slated to have two scholarships available — assuming Dexter Dennis withdraws from the 2020 NBA Draft and returns to WSU, as well as forward Trey Wade and guard Alterique Gilbert exhaust their eligibility this upcoming season.

But Gregg Marshall and his trio of assistants in Isaac Brown, Lou Gudino and Tyson Waterman can’t focus solely on the 2021 class. That’s because WSU’s 2022 recruiting class is projected to be another pivotal one for the program with five scholarships expected to be available with the departures of a large senior class in Dennis, Isaiah Poor Bear-Chandler, Morris Udeze, Craig Porter and Trevin Wade.

The Shockers are off to a fast start in their recruiting efforts for their 2021 and 2022 classes and to help keep track of the madness, the Eagle has compiled a list of more than 30 prospects that WSU has either offered or shown interest in.

Tamar Bates of Piper High, holding the 2019 state title trophy, has not been able to play AAU basketball yet during the spring/summer season because of the pandemic. The NCAA on Wednesday extended the recruiting dead period to July 31.
