Shockers to wear pink uniforms that will be up for auction after game Thursday
The timing was right, Gregg Marshall said.
Wichita State is set to debut hot pink uniforms for its game Thursday at home against South Florida for its “Pink Out” game in connection with Coaches vs. Cancer and the American Cancer Society. The Shockers will wear pink shoes, too, through the “generosity of Under Armour,” Marshall said. But there is a little more to the story.
“My mom’s going through some breast cancer situation right now,” Marshall said. “Our vice president of the university and a good friend of mine, Elizabeth King, has gone through a similar deal at about the same time. So when they asked me, I said, ‘Well, we need to honor those ladies and just bring awareness and try to raise some money.’”
Each of the pink jerseys will be auctioned off after Thursday’s game, Marshall said. Game-worn shorts and other items like autographed basketball and Marshall’s tie and shoes will be up for bidding in the days following the game, according to a WSU release.
All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society, according to the release.
“I know my wife has already talked about try to buy Noah Fernandes’,” Marshall said. “So no one bid on that one. I think Lynn’s gonna try to buy it.”
Marshall said he hadn’t seen the pink uniforms as of Tuesday afternoon. They have the same black and white piping around the shoulders and knees, but instead of a classic Shocker yellow, highlighter pink has taken its place.
Marshall said he takes a lot of pride in getting to put on an event within the game like this.
“We do quite a bit of that with our Guest Coach Program that we have, and we’ve raised a lot of money over the years for the local charities by doing that,” Marshall said. “It’s been just a win-win, so it’s great.”
