Wichita State women’s basketball set school record in road victory at Temple
The Wichita State women’s basketball team drilled a school record 15 three-pointers in its 85-75 road win at Temple on Wednesday evening at McGonigle Hall.
The sharpshooting performance was somewhat of a surprise for a team that entered the game ranked 10th out of 12 teams in the American Athletic Conference with 27.6% accuracy beyond the arc. But WSU made 50.8% from the field, including 15 of 27 three-pointers, and logged a season-high 21 assists.
WSU improved to 13-10 overall and 5-5 in conference play, registering its first regular-season sweep of a conference opponent and its third road win of the season behind a career-high 19 points, including five three-pointers, by senior Maya Brewer. Temple dropped to 13-9 overall and 5-4 in conference play.
Ashley Reid made a career-high five three-pointers for 15 points and a career-high six assists, while Seraphine Bastin nearly tallied a triple-double with 13 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Asia Henderson added 10 points and DJ McCarty (14 points) had her first double-digit scoring performance since Nov. 30.
The Shockers fell behind 23-15 after the first quarter, but rallied with one of their best quarters. WSU outscored Temple 24-9 in the second quarter with Brewer scoring 13 of her team-high 19 points in the quarter. Brewer had eight points during a 10-1 run to open the second quarter, as WSU grabbed a lead that it would not relinquish.
When Temple cut the deficit to 75-68 with 4:58 remaining in the fourth quarter, WSU responded with three straight three-pointers: Brewer made the first two and Reid capped the 9-0 run that secured the victory.
