Wichita State Shockers

Two losses in one week enough to drop Wichita State basketball from top 25 ranking

After a two-week stay in the national college basketball rankings, the Wichita State men’s basketball team exited the Associated Press Top 25 poll on Monday.

WSU ascended to No. 16 in last week’s poll following a 15-1 start, but the Shockers lost 65-53 at Temple last Wednesday and then 65-54 to Houston at home last Saturday. Those two losses were enough to drop WSU (15-3, 3-2 American) from the rankings, although it was the first team out with 94 points — 535 less than last week’s 629 points.

After its win at Koch Arena, Houston (14-4, 4-1 American) jumped to No. 25 in the AP poll. Memphis (14-3, 3-1 American), ranked No. 20, is the only other AAC team in the top 25.

“It’s like we don’t recognize what got us to the point we were,” WSU coach Gregg Marshall said after the Houston loss. “Now we don’t have to worry about rankings anymore and streaks. We just have to worry about being a good basketball team.”

WSU will look for a bounce-back performance 6 p.m. Central time Tuesday in a conference road test at last-place South Florida (8-10, 1-4 American) at the Yuengling Center in Tampa.
