What Newton star Ty Berry thinks about a ‘backyard’ offer from Wichita State
Wichita State finally extended a scholarship offer on Monday to Newton guard Ty Berry, officially joining the sweepstakes for perhaps the top prospect in Kansas for the class of 2020.
Berry is a 6-foot-2 guard who is rated as a four-star prospect by Rivals. He averaged 12.3 points, 3.4 assists, and 2.3 steals per game for the 16-under KC Run GMC team in the Under Armour Association this summer, racking up offers from Kansas State, Nebraska, Minnesota, Colorado, and Creighton (among others) along the way.
The Newton junior-to-be says he’s in no rush with his recruitment, but he was excited when WSU officially offered after watching him play this past weekend at the Mullen’s tournament at Wichita Hoops.
“It’s really cool since they’re right in my backyard,” Berry said. “It’s good to have one so close to home.”
Berry said he has been to multiple Wichita State home games and has always enjoyed the atmosphere at Koch Arena.
“It’s sweet,” Berry said. “The atmosphere there is pretty crazy and I like that it’s basically sold out every home game. It’s pretty sweet.”
He’s also been impressed by WSU head coach Gregg Marshall and his recent track record of pumping out NBA guards, like Fred VanVleet, Ron Baker, and most recently Landry Shamet.
“I like coach Marshall a lot,” Berry said. “I feel like he lets his guards play and kind of control the game for him. That’s how I like it.”
Berry is known as a natural scorer from all three levels of the floor. He’s a capable passer and has been Run GMC’s go-to playmaker this summer. Berry has also been able to showcase his athleticism against other top competition on the UAA circuit.
Finding a point guard in the 2019 or 2020 class is a priority for the Shockers since the team’s current tandem, Samajae Haynes-Jones and Ricky Torres, will both be gone by the 2020-21 season. Current freshman Jamarius Burton, who would then be a junior, could project to be a point guard down the line.
