Sam Hilliard’s grand slam helps Wichita State beat No. 11 Dallas Baptist
Wichita State got its first grand slam of the season, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.
Sam Hilliard hit a grand slam in the sixth to break open a close game, helping the Shockers whip No. 11 Dallas Baptist 10-3 Friday night in Duncanville, Texas.
With the score tied 3-3, Chase Rader opened the sixth by getting hit by a pitch. He was caught off first but made it successfully to second for a stolen base. Tanner Kirk followed with a single, and Trey Vickers singled Rader home with a single.
Daniel Kihle walked to load the bases and set the stage for Hilliard’s heroics.
Ryan Tinkham and Bob Arens also homered for WSU, matching a season high.
Taylor Goshen picked up the win in relief, continuing his outstanding relief pitching against Dallas Baptist. He has pitched five innings against the Patriots and has not allowed a run or a hit.
Zach Reding, who is from Dallas, scored WSU’s first run in the second. He singled and scored on Vickers’ groundout to gain a 1-1 tie.
Tinkham’s two-run homer in the fifth again tied it at 3-3.
Notes: Hilliard has hit in nine straight games, and Mikel Mucha has hit in seven straight.… DBU starter Cory Taylor and WSU starter Jeb Bargfeldt both pitched for Owasso, Okla., High.… DBU came into the game 29-2 when it scores first. Now, it is 29-3.… Chase Williams (2-4, 6.70 ERA) will pitch for WSU on Saturday.…WSU’s victory, coupled with Bradley’s loss at Missouri State, means the Shockers and Braves are tied for third in the Valley at 10-10.
