Wichita State sophomore Grant Bennett tied for lead in NCAA golf regional

Wichita State sophomore Grant Bennett is tied for first at the NCAA San Diego Regional after shooting a first-round 3-under-par 69 at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

The Shockers, seeded 12th in the 13-team field, are in third place with a 4-over 292, eight shots behind leader Oklahoma and three behind East Tennessee State. Fourth-place Saint Mary’s is three shots back.

The low five teams and the low individual advance to the finals beginning May 29 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.

Joining Bennett atop the leaderboard are Oklahoma’s Grant Hirschman and East Tennessee State’s Gudmundur Kristjansson.

WSU senior Louis Cohen Boyer is in a five-way tie for eighth with a 72. Oklahoma’s Michael Gellerman, from Sterling, shot a 71 and is tied for sixth. Kansas State’s Matt Green, playing as an individual, is tied for 13th with a 1-over 73.

WSU’s Gage Ihrig (75) is tied for 32nd, followed by teammates Conrad Walcher (76), tied for 42nd, and Alec Heinen (82), tied for 69th.

The second round is Friday, followed by Saturday’s final round.
