Wichita State women’s tennis loses in NCAA Regional play

Wichita State’s women’s tennis team pushed No. 24 Georgia Tech for almost four hours before losing 4-3 on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Team Championships in Gainesville, Fla.

Megan Kurey clinched the match for Georgia Tech (17-9) with a 3-6, 7-6 (6), 7-5 win over Abby Stevens at No. 4 singles in a match that took two hours, 25 minutes. Stevens led 5-3 in the final set.

WSU (24-4) won the doubles point with Lucia Kovalova and Rebecca Pedrazzi defeating Kurey and Alexa Anton Ohlymeyer 8-4 and Gabriela Porubin and Julia Schiller defeating Alexis Prokopuik and Kendal Woodard 8-3.

Georgia Tech’s Johnnise Renaud defeated Schilller 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.

Pedrazzi defeated Woodard 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles and Aleksandra Trifunovic defeated Prokopuik 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.

Georgia Tech plays top-seeded Florida on Saturday in the second round. The winner advances to the round of 16 in Waco, Texas.

Schroeder leads golf team – WSU’s women’s golf team shot a 312 for the second straight day and moved up one spot to No. 16 in the NCAA Raleigh (N.C.) Regional.

Bryce Schroeder is tied for 19th after shooting a second-round 71, six shots better than Thursday’s score. Taryn Torgerson is tied for 72nd with a 157, three shots ahead of Alejandra Arellano.

WSU is 12 strokes behind Georgia Regents University. South Carolina leads the 18-team field, eight shots ahead of Alabama.
