Wichita State Shockers

Shockers lose battle of strike zone in 9-1 loss at Missouri State

Wichita State batters struck out 17 times and its pitchers issued 13 walks Saturday in a 9-1 loss at Missouri State.

Every WSU regular struck out at least once, and third baseman Chase Rader fanned four times.

Missouri State starter Matt Hall (7-2) struck out a season-high 15 in seven innings, and reliever Sam Perez added two strikeouts.

The Shockers grabbed a 1-0 lead with a run in the first. Ryan Tinkham walked and went to second on a wild pitch. Gunnar Troutwine’s two-out single sent Tinkham home.

However, WSU would get just three more hits. Mikel Mucha had an infield single, Sam Hilliard hit a double off the right-field fence in the eighth and Zach Reding singled in the ninth.

The Bears took the lead for good in the third with three two-out runs. Chase Williams issued three walks in the inning and two of them scored. Williams finished with nine walks in 4 1/3 innings. Three WSU relievers combined to issue four walks in the final 3 2/3 innings.

Notes: WSU coach Todd Butler was ejected for the first time this season. After the top of the fifth, Butler was walking to the dugout from coaching at third base when he got into an argument with home plate unpire Mark Hutchinson. Trey Vickers, Daniel Kihle and Ryan Tinkham had struck out in the top of the fifth.… Troutwine has hit in six straight games.… The worst strikeout game for WSU was 21 vs. Oral Roberts in 2009 during a 13-inning game.… Tyler Jones came on to pitch in the seventh with the bases loaded and none out. WSU would have been run-ruled if all those runners scored. Jones struck out two and got MSU’s top hitter Eric Cheray to fly out for the third out.… MSU stranded 13 runners, eight in scoring position. WSU stranded seven, two in scoring position.… Tanner Kirk, who fouled a ball off his foot Friday, was held out of Saturday’s game and is questionable for Sunday.… Jeb Bargfeldt (2-3, 4.19 ERA) will pitch for WSU on Sunday.
