Wichita State wins MVC men’s golf championship

Wichita State’s men’s golf team won its eighth consecutive Missouri Valley Conference Championships on Tuesday with a 37-stroke victory over its nearest competitors.

Louis Cohen Boyer earned medalist honors for the Shockers after shooting a 5-under-par 211 to defeat Loyola’s Garret Buckley by three shots. WSU’s Grant Bennett placed third with a 216.

WSU claimed the MVC’s automatic bid to an NCAA regional. The Shockers finished with a 3-over 864 after Tuesday’s final-round 291. Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois tied for second with a 901. Evansville and Bradley tied for fourth with a 903, followed by Missouri State (917), Loyola (921), Drake (923) and Illinois State (929).

WSU won its 20th title, most of any MVC school. It streak of eight titles trails Oklahoma State’s streak of nine from 1947-55.

WSU’s Jacob Bishop and Conrad Walcher (220) tied for fifth. Alec Heinen shot a 231 to finish in a tie for 26th.

Cohen Boyer is the fourth straight Shocker to win medalist honors.
