Wichita State wins 7th straight MVC tennis title
Wichita State’s women’s tennis team won its seventh straight Missouri Valley Conference Championships on Sunday in Evanvsille, Ind.
The top-seeded Shockers defeated second-seeded Drake 4-0 at the Evansville Tennis Center to earn the Valley’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. WSU (24-3) will make its seventh straight NCAA appearance and ninth since 2006.
WSU’s Julia Schiller defeated Mariel Ante at 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Garbriela Porubin defeated Maddie Johnson 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. WSU’s victory at No. 3 singles by Abby Stevens, 6-1, 6-3 over Nell Boyd, clinched the victory.
WSU’s No. 1 doubles team of Lucia Kovalova and Rebecca Pedrazzi defeated Ante and Adrienne Jensen 8-3. Schiller and Porubin defeated Boyd and Johnson 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.
The Shockers won their 69th straight match against an MVC opponent and are 9-1 in championship matches over the past 10 seasons.
