Wichita State rolls into MVC tennis championship match

Wichita State’s women’s tennnis team defeated Southern Illinois 4-0 on Saturday in the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Championships in Evansville, Ind.

The top-seeded Shockers (23-3) play in the championship match at 10 a.m., Sunday and will try to win their seventh straight tournament title. WSU has played in 10 straight championship matches, losing only in 2008. WSU has won 68 straight matches against MVC schools since that 2008 loss to Indiana State.

The Shockers won No. 1 and No. 3 doubles 8-1 and two of the three finished singles matches 6-0, 6-0. WSU WSU’s Abby Stevens and Aleks Trifunovic won their singles matches 6-0, 6-0 to become 30-match winners this season. Stevens (30-6) and Trifunovic (30-4) are the fifth and sixth Shockers to reach that total.

The winner of Sunday’s final earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
