Wichita State wins second straight MVC golf title

Wichita State’s women’s golf team won its second straight Missouri Valley Conference title with senior Alejandra Arellano earning medalist honors at Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa.

The Shockers shot a 924 and defeated Missouri State by 13 shots. WSU led Southern Illinois by one shot after Sunday’s first round and increased that lead to 11 strokes over Missouri State on Monday. WSU finished the tournament by shooting a 312 on Tuesday to earn the MVC’s automatic bid to the NCAA regionals.

Arellano also led from start to finish and her 6-over-par 222 was six strokes better than runner-up Brooke Cusamano of Illinois State. WSU’s Maria Alejandra Villalobos finished in a tie for fifth with a 234. Bryce Schroeder tied for seventh with a 235, followed by Meghan Schuetz at 17th with a 240 and Taryn Torgerson tied for 21st with a 242.

Arellano won her first tournament after tying her career-low round with a first-round 72. She joins Ann Vandermillen (1987) as WSU’s medalists.

NCAA play begins May 7.
