News and notes
▪ Notre Dame leads the all-time series 2-1 with the Fighting Irish claiming the last meeting, an 81-70 victory in the 2015 Sweet 16 in Cleveland. Rashard Kelly, Zach Brown, and Shaquille Morris all played in that game for WSU, while Bonzie Colson is the only current Notre Dame player to have played in the game. Wichita State’s lone win came on Jan. 10, 1991 at Koch Arena, a 60-50 victory.
▪ Wichita State has won 22 straight games played on Wednesdays, the last loss coming on Dec. 3, 2014 in an overtime loss at No. 25 Utah.
▪ Marshall does have a taste of prior success against Brey before he arrived to Wichita State. Marshall led No. 11 seed Winthrop to a 74-64 upset over No. 6 seed Notre Dame in the opening round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament.
▪ The last 30 Maui champions have gone on to play in the NCAA Tournament with five winning the national championship, including North Carolina last season. Since 2010-11, 12 of the 14 Maui finalists have won at least one game in the NCAA Tournament and six have reached the Final Four.
▪ Brey is on pace to become Notre Dame’s career leader in coaching wins. He owns 386 victories; the school record is 393. When Brey reaches 400 wins at Notre Dame it will make him one of 13 active coaches with that many at their current school. Brey can also reach 500 wins in his career, which would make him the 31st active coach to reach the milestone.
▪ A win would improve Wichita State to 5-1 all-time in the Maui Invitational, the fourth-highest winning percentage in the tournament’s 34-year history behind Duke (16-0), Syracuse (10-0), and North Carolina (20-3).
▪ The Fighting Irish won the Legends Classic title in Brooklyn last season and will be looking for their second straight in-season tournament title. Notre Dame also won the 2001 Hawaii-Pacific Thanksgiving Classic and the Old Spice Classic in 2010 under Brey.
▪ Wichita State is 12-15 against AP top-25 teams under Marshall, but 9-8 since the start of their NCAA Tournament streak in 2011-12.
▪ Wichita State has two regular-season tournaments under Marshall: the 2012 Cancun Challenge and the 2013 CBE Classic. But the Shockers haven’t won an 8-team tournament since 1963. And they’ve never won a title of any kind in Hawaii, where they are 12-10 all-time and 7-2 under Marshall.
