News and notes

▪ Expect a lot of shots from beyond the arc, especially after Wichita State looked shaky in its three-point defense against California. Marquette already launches a ton of threes (nearly 47 percent of its shots come from beyond the arc) and took more threes (36) than twos (30) in its 94-83 victory over VCU on Monday. A parade of threes is surely coming from Howard, Hauser, and Rausey, who are taking on average 23 three-pointers per game on 37-percent accuracy.

▪ Rowsey is the one to watch. If Wichita State fans thought Don Coleman did everything for Cal, then Rowsey will be an even bigger step-up in usage. Coleman used 31 percent of his team’s possessions while on the court compared to Rowsey’s 34 percent at Marquette. He takes a ton of threes (averaging nine per game) and is an expert at manufacturing fouls and getting to the line, where he is a 91 percent shooter. He’s averaging 22.7 points and has made at least three three-pointers in all three games. Expect to see Zach Brown assigned to him for the majority of the game.

▪ Marquette is a relatively young and inexperienced team. Rowsey, the team’s leading scorer, is the only senior on roster. Marquette features nine players in their first or second seasons, which is the eighth-highest total in Division I on teams with no more than one senior. According to KenPom, Marquette ranked 270th in the country in experience and 133rd in minutes continuity from last season.

▪ Marquette’s defense has allowed teams to compile an effective field goal percentage of 54.6 in its first three games, which ranks No. 266 in the country. The Golden Eagles allow opponents to shoot close to 59 percent on two-pointers, which ranks in the bottom 40 in the country. Wichita State’s eFG% is at 56 percent entering and the Shockers are also 56 percent on two-pointers.

▪ Despite that inexperience, Marquette owns one of the top offenses in college basketball. After finishing No. 7 in Adjusted Offensive Effiency last season, Marquette is ranked No. 20 this season entering Tuesday. The Golden Eagles don’t necessarily do anything that stands out, but they rarely turn it over, rebound about a third of their own misses, and take a ton of threes (nearly 47 percent of their shots are from beyond the arc).

▪ This is the third time Marquette has competed in the Maui Invitational. The Golden Eagles finished fifth in their last trip in 2012, then reached the championship game before falling to Duke in 2007. Coach Steve Wojciechowski was the tournament MVP playing for Duke in 1997 and is the first MVP to return to the island as a head coach.

▪ Wichita State’s 18-point comeback in Monday’s 92-82 victory over California was the largest comeback since erasing a 19-point deficit in the final 12 minutes against Missouri State to keep its undefeated season in tact at 17-0 in January 2014.

▪ Shaquille Morris scored a career-high 25 points against California and blocked four shots to move into fourth place on WSU’s career blocks list with 106. Landry Shamet matched his career-best with 23 points and extended his streak of consecutive games with a three-pointer to 28, giving him sole possession of the school record and one longer than Ron Baker. Gregg Marshall passed Ralph Miller for the program’s all-time mark in games coaches, as he was on the sidelines for the 354th game in his 11th season at WSU on Monday.

▪ Wichita State is guaranteed to play two more games that will help beef up its non-conference resume. Marquette is likely to remain a top-100 team and the Shockers will either play Notre Dame (No. 18 in KenPom) or Michigan (No. 45) on Wednesday.

▪ This is the first roster in Wojciechowski’s four years at Marquette with exclusively his players.

▪ Marquette has won four of the seven matchups in the series, although this will be the first game played between the two since Jan. 2, 1978.
