News and notes

Shockers on the island. The Shockers are making their second appearance in the Maui Invitational. The other appearance came in 2010 when they lost to eventual national champion Connecticut in the opening round, then defeated Chaminade and Virginia for a fifth-place finish. Wichita State would go on to win the NIT that season. WSU has played in other tournaments in Hawaii dating back to 1981, but has never won a championship. Wichita State is 9-10 all-time in Hawaii.

What to know about Cal. The Bears are coming off a 21-win campaign that ended in the NIT, which made for the eighth time in the last nine years Cal has played in the postseason. Wyking Jones takes over the program after serving as an assistant the past two season. Monday’s meeting will be the second between the two programs, as California defeated Wichita State 75-68 in the Lobo Invitational in December 1975.

What a title would mean. Wichita State hasn’t won a tournament with eight teams in it since Dave Stallworth powered the Shockers to the 1963 All-College Classic championship.

Coleman a scoring phenom. California junior guard Don Coleman is coming off back-to-back 30-point performances, the first time that has been accomplished at Cal since Ryan Anderson did it in 2008. Coleman is averaging 25.7 points on 44 percent shooting on nearly 17 attempts per game.

Big matchup for the big men. Wichita State’s three senior posts — Shaquille Morris, Rauno Nurger, and Darral Willis — are averaging a combined 47 points and 20 rebounds. The Shockers have outrebounded opponents by an average of 21 and outscored opponents 83-24 in the paint. They will have a tall challenge against California’s front line of Marcus Lee (6 foot 11) and Kingsley Okoroh (7-1).

One three for history. Landry Shamet can become the school record-holder for consecutive games with a three-pointer with a make on Monday. Shamet has connected on a three in 27 straight games, tying Ron Baker for the record. Teammates Conner Frankamp is currently on a career-long 24-game streak with a three-pointer.

One block to move up. Morris can tie Shocker legend Xavier McDaniel (1981-85) for fifth on the career blocks list with one more swat. Morris (102) needs three more to tie Gene Wiley (1959-62) for fourth place.

Fast starts. Wichita State has outscored its two opponents 109-45 in the first half for an average halftime lead of 32 points.

Marshall milestone. Gregg Marshall will coach his 354th game on Monday, breaking Ralph Miller’s record for most games coached at Wichita State. Marshall passed Miller as the program’s winningest coach in February 2015.
