Wichita State Shockers

Texas beats Wichita State 6-4

Wichita State’s Ryan Tinkham continued his torrid hitting, but the Shockers dropped a 6-4 decision to Texas on Tuesday night in Austin.

Tinkham, who hit in his 11th straight game, went 3 for 4, including his third homer of the season. His two-run shot in the sixth drew WSU to within a run at 5-4. Daniel Kihle was hit by a pitch to set the stage for Tinkham.

The first baseman, who is third in the nation in doubles (15), is 22 for 44 (.500) in his last 11 games.

Texas jumped to a 4-0 lead with two runs in each of the first two innings. WSU got on the board with two runs in the fourth, thanks to a two-out, two-run double by Gunnar Troutwine.

The Shockers missed a golden opportunity in the eighth. They loaded the bases with one out. Bob Arens lifted a fly ball to left that was not deep enough to score Tinkham from third, then Trey Vickers grounded out to first to end the threat.

Notes — Second baseman Chase Rader was held out of the game with an injured knee and ankle. He was injured in the ninth inning Sunday against Indiana State when he was slid into during a double play attempt. He is expected to play Friday against Illinois State.… The last time WSU went to Austin, it was shut out by Calvin Schiraldi (one-hitter) 2-0 and by Roger Clemens (five-hitter) 12-0. Clemens’ son Kacy played first base for Texas on Tuesday night.… Texas broke a seven-game losing streak.… WSU is 0-6 vs. Big 12 foes.… WSU is 1-14 when trailing after seven innings. Texas is 13-0 when leading after seven innings.
