Wichita State, Newman win JK Gold Classic titles

Wichita State won the men’s and women’s dual races to claim the JK Gold Classic on Saturday at the RAFT Golf Course near Augusta.

Chris Burnett, running unattached for WSU, won the men’s 6-kilometer race with a time of 18 minutes, 5.74 seconds. Kansas State’s Morgan Wedekind won the women’s 4-kilometer with a time of 13:44 with teammate Laura Galvan second at 13:44.29. WSU sophomore Sidney Hirsch led five Shocker finishers in the top 10 by placing third with a time of 13:55.58.

WSU’s Brady Johnson, also running unattached, placed second in the men’s race with a time of 18:13.10. Paul Raymond finished fourth (18:35.83) to lead WSU’s team scoring.

The NCAA Division I portion of the meet was scored as a dual and WSU defeated Kansas State and Oral Roberts head to head.

Newman won the men’s and women’s college team scores. Nick Marvin placed 23rd overall (19:29.07) for the Jets and Rubi Torres placed 18th (14:48.23) in the women’s race.

Andover sophomore wins high school race — Andover’s Carly Flake won the high school girls 4-kilometer run with a time of 14:50.69, finishing ahead of Kapaun Mount Carmel sophomore Kelsi Andrews and her time of 15:05.73.

Trinity Academy won the girls team title by placing two runners in the top 10 and four in the top 15.

Andover’s Alex Moen finished second in the boys 5-kilometer with a time of 16:30.61.
