TCU rocks Shockers as WSU injuries pile up
Texas Christian hit Wichita State with a pair of five-run innings, hammering the injury-riddled Shockers 14-1 on Friday night in Fort Worth.
Wichita State announced before the game that two-way player Willie Schwanke pulled a muscle last weekend on his final pitch against Southern Illinois and will de sidelined indefinitely.
Reliever Taylor Goshen has injured his elbow and is out. Starter Sam Tewes (shoulder) may be used in relief in the TCU series. No. 2 starter Isaac Anderson (elbow) will not return for some time.
And the Shockers’ bad fortune continued Friday. In the third, shortstop Tanner Kirk was hit by a pitch and was helped to the bench. The pitch glanced off the bill of his helmet and appeared to strike him in the face.
Fifth-ranked TCU sent 10 batters to the plate in the first, scoring five runs on four hits. Shocker started Sam Hilliard walked two batters with the bases loaded.
The Horned Frogs (19-4) struck for five more in the fifth, aided by three walks, a hit batter and a passed ball.
WSU (11-14) scored an unearned run in the third. Kirk was hit by a pitch and with two outs, Mikel Mucha singled in Trey Vickers, who ran for Kirk. There were two Horned Frog errors in the inning.
Notes — WSU will send Jeb Bargfeldt (2-0, 2.16) to the mound Saturday to face Preston Morrison (5-0, 1.62). Morrison was Pitcher of the Year in the Big 12 last season.
