Wichita State baseball’s Butler: I’m not recruiting 10-year-olds

The Wichita Eagle

You can stop asking why Wichita State baseball coach Todd Butler would recruit a player barely out of the picking-flowers-in-the-outfield stage. Butler said he is not recruiting a 10-year-old in Texas.

“It’s not correct by a long shot,” he said. “I’m not mad. There’s no harm, other than people thinking I’m recruiting 10-year-olds.”

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, in a recent story about the expenses of high-level youth baseball, quoted Lale Esquivel saying WSU contacted his son. Esquivel is the owner and coach of the Texas Bombers.

Butler knows Esquivel and recently talked to him on the phone, but not in regard to his son.

“It was a courtesy call,” Butler said. “We didn’t even talk about his kids.”
