K-State sophomore wins women’s shot put at NCAA meet
Kansas State’s Shadae Lawrence won the women’s discus and Nina Schultz finished second in the heptathlon during the final day of competition at the NCAA outdoor championships in Eugene, Ore.
The K-State women finished in ninth place in the team standings with 25 points. Oregon won the team title with 64 points, giving Oregon’s women a sweep of the cross country, indoor and outdoor titles.
Lawrence, a sophomore from St. Catherine, Jamaica, threw the discus 201 feet, 4 inches on her final attempt to move her into the lead. Lawrence threw the discus at seven meets this spring and won all seven, including the Big 12 meet with a personal best of 205-4.
Schultz, a freshman from New Westminster, Canada, scored 5,959 points. Georgia senior Kendell Williams won her third NCAA heptathlon title with 6,265 points. The NCAA meet was Schultz’s second heptathlon of the season.
Wichita State’s Breanne Borman finished 11th and Gavyn Yetter 12th in the heptathlon. Teammate Nikki Larch-Miller, who was in ninth place after the opening day, withdrew Saturday with an ankle injury after one attempt in the day’s first event, the long jump.
