Draw it up
Wichita State scored on three inbound plays. It scored on a well-executed play that produced a layup for Tekele Cotton and a 78-74 lead with 40 seconds to play.
In a game with a lot of up and downs, sometimes the details mattered. WSU used Indiana’s aggressiveness against it to get Ron Baker and Zach Brown layups.
“On the underneath out-of-bounds, they tried to deny and switch a lot to try to make it hard for you to get it in,” WSU guard Fred VanVleet said. “Somebody made a great pass to Tekele to get the layup and sealed the game. Coach (Gregg Marshall) said we executed well. We haven’t been doing things great in recent weeks, but those weeks are behind us.”
Those points can make a big difference and sometimes they’re easier to come by against a new opponent.
“Indiana scored on some of their stuff against us,” Marshall said. “We were able to exploit some of the set plays and attack certain players at certain times. One of the beautiful things about playing out of sets is everyone knows what the other person is doing, so even if you don’t score on the initial set, you can often score quickly by playing out of the set.”
WSU’s record watch
VanVleet scored 27 points to hit 1,018 for his career and become the 45th Shocker to pass 1,000.
He ranks 42nd on WSU’s career list, behind teammate Tekele Cotton and former Shocker Ron Heller with 1,022.
Cotton’s two steals give him 152 for his career, one behind Jamar Howard in fourth place.
Off to the line
Baker can’t shake his late-season shooting slump. He went 3 for 13 on Friday, 0 for 5 from behind the arc. In his past five games, he is 6 for 33 from three-point range and 19 of 59 overall.
“I wasn’t shooting the ball like I normally do,” he said. “That’s fine. I’ve got good teammates and a good coaching staff to keep me grounded, keep my mind right. I just gotta keep shooting.”
Baker contributed in other ways and by the final minutes decided the best way was to drive and draw fouls. He scored nine of his 15 points in and made 7 of 8 free throws the second half.
Worth noting
Wichita State tied the series 1-all and improved to 14-12 in its 12th NCAA Tournament. Indiana lost a tournament opener for the first time since 2008 and is 64-33 in 38 tournaments. … Indiana’s 11 three-pointers are the most allowed by WSU this season. The Hoosiers extended their school-record season total to 308 threes. … Marshall is 7-10 in the NCAA Tournament. The Shockers won an NCAA game for the third straight season, a first for the program.
