Shocker fall to Sycamores 5-3, will be No. 5 seed in Valley tournament
Indiana State scored all its runs in the sixth and beat Wichita State 5-3 Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind., in the final game of the regular season.
The victory enabled the Sycamores to gain the No. 3 in the Missouri Valley Conference baseball tournament. The Shockers are the No. 5 seed and will play Southern Illinois (No. 4) in Wednesday’s first round at 4 p.m. in Springfield, Mo.
WSU (10-11, 27-28) built a 3-0 lead thanks to Greyson Jenista. He hit a two-run homer in the third after Jordan Boyer had doubled. Jenista hit a solo shot in the fifth, his ninth homer of the season.
Starter Robbie Evans cruised through five innings, not giving up a hit until two outs in the fourth.
Indiana State’s Tony Rosselli opened the sixth with a single, the third hit off Evans. Dane Giesler was hit by a pitch and Clay Dungan singled in Rosselli to knock out Evans.
Adam Keller relieved Evans. Jeff Zahn doubled in Giesler. Keller threw two pitches and was credited with the loss when Chandler Sanburn allowed a two-run single.
ISU (12-9, 27-24) sent nine batters to the plate in the sixth. It was the only inning the Sycamores threatened — they did not get a baserunner to second in the other seven innings.
Notes: WSU fell to 5-21 on the road.… Catcher Gunner Troutwine’s throwing error in the sixth was his first error this season.
