Wichita State ranked No. 14 in final AP poll

Wichita State is No. 14 in the Associated Press men’s college basketball poll, its sixth appearance in the final poll.

The Shockers (28-4) dropped two spots from last week’s poll and six from its high of No. 8, which it held for a week in December before losing at Utah and a week in March before losing to Illinois State.

WSU opens the NCAA Tournament on Friday against Indiana in Omaha.

Kansas (26-8) is No. 10. The Jayhawks play New Mexico State on Friday in Omaha. Northern Iowa (30-3) is No. 11.

WSU joins the teams from 1963 (No. 5), 1964 (No. 5), 1983 (No. 14), 2012 (No. 18) and 2014 (No. 2)in the final AP poll. The AP poll traditionally ends before NCAA and NIT play.

The Shockers also finished in final coaches polls in 1963 (No. 6), 1964 (No. 6), 1965 (No. 14), 2006 (No. 21), 2013 (No. 4) and 2014 (No. 7), voted on after the NCAA Tournament.

Monday’s poll pushed WSU’s record of consecutive weeks in the AP poll to 39.
