Going to Chapel
The production, or lack thereof, of Wichita State’s bench this season has been a point of frustration for Adams. Rarely does she play more than two reserves meaningful minutes, and rarely do those players contribute.
So that’s what makes sophomore Jaleesa Chapel’s 10 points in Saturday’s victory so important. Chapel played a career-high 31 minutes and came two points away from her career-high in points on 5-of-10 shooting.
“It just takes the pressure off of what Alex (Harden) does for us, what Kelsey (Jacobs) does for us,” Adams said.
Chapel was soft-spoken about her success after the game and deflected credit to teammates for finding her, as eight of her 10 points came on mid-range jump shots.
“She’s being modest,” Harden said. “She’s in the gym all the time working on those shots. Teams are going to give her that shot until she shoots them. Now she’s making them, so they’re going to have to guard her or else.”
Defending the 3
Adams has proven her ability as a defensive coach, and once again devised a winning game plan in Saturday’s victory that held UNI to a season-low in three-pointers made.
WSU forced the Panthers to attack one-on-one, as Adams instructed her defenders along the arc to stay attached to UNI’s shooters even when a ball handler penetrated the lane. That limited open kick-out opportunities and made UNI do something it was not comfortable doing.
The results were telling: UNI missed 19 of its 22 three-pointers and shot just 25 percent for the game.
“They rely a lot on running their sets,” Adams said. “We pressured them and jumped the passing lanes and threw different looks at them to take them out of their sets, which made them make individual plays at the rim.”
Adams T’ed up
For just the second time in her seven seasons at Wichita State, Adams was whistled for a technical foul with 3:41 remaining in the first half.
Adams was upset over a non-call and came past the line designating the end of the coaches’ box to yell at a referee on the other end of the court. Wichita State led 23-13 at the time.
“I thought I would get a warning first,” Adams joked afterward. “I didn’t cuss. I just stomped my foot. I think I have a fractured heel. I need to ice.”
