Cheerleaders unite
Due to conflicts with mid-terms, the Loyola cheer squad was able to send only one cheerleader, sophomore Maddie Kenney, to this week’s tournament.
When the Wichita State squad, which had a full complement of cheerleaders and yell leaders, found out, they immediately invited Kenney to cheer with them during timeouts.
“I totally thought they were kidding at first,” Kenney said. “Next thing I knew, I was in an extension.”
Kenney told them her story and how she had not actually been in the air since high school. Wichita State obliged and during a timeout in the first half, Kenney was raised in the air along with the rest of the Wichita State cheerleaders.
The Wichita State crowd roared its approval at the display of sportsmanship.
“If you get a bunch of cheerleaders in the same room together, eventually somebody is going to be flying through the air,” Wichita State cheer coach Kelli Rappard said. “That was really cool to see the crowd’s reaction. It was so sweet.”
For Kenney, it was a moment she said she will always remember.
“It was absolutely incredible and it really meant a lot to see the sportsmanship Wichita State displayed,” Kenney said. “It’s our job as cheerleaders to encourage and spread team spirit, so it’s really awesome we had the opportunity to do it together.”
Shutting down Manuel – Loyola is a team that runs through its 6-foot-2 sophomore in the post, Taylor Manuel, who was named All-Valley earlier this week after averaging 16.2 points and 9.6 rebounds.
On Friday, Manuel was limited to eight points on 2-of-7 shooting and turned the ball over seven times.
“They had a lot of pressure and it was difficult at times,” Manuel said. “I would get the ball and they would double from the opposite side or they would have a guard sitting there. I had to tell my guards, ‘I can’t throw the ball to you, there’s help-side.’”
After scouting Manuel, Adams noted there were specific places on the court where she liked to catch the ball. WSU prevented her from reaching those spots and also threw four different defenders guard her in various ways to keep Manuel off-balanced.
“She’s bigger than us, so we had to stay active with her,” Harden said. “We had to make her make the pass and not be a scorer.”
Worth noting – Harden didn’t set just one record on Friday, as her seven steals in the victory gave her 96 for the season and the single-season record at WSU.… WSU set its single-season record for wins with 27.
