Alex Harden chosen MVC women’s Player of the Year
Wichita State senior Alex Harden was chosen Missouri Valley Conference Player of the year in voting announced Thursday.
WSU senior Jamillah Bonner was chosen defensive player of the year, and Jody Adams was selected coach of the year.
Harden, a guard from Springfield, Ill., averages 16.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists and leads the MVC with an average of 3 steals. She ranks second WSU history in scoring (1,625 points), second in steals, third in assists and fifth blocks.
Harden is the first Shocker to earn player of the year honors since Kareema Williams in 1992.
Bonner is the fourth consecutive Shocker to win the defensive award, following Harden (2013, 2014) and Haleigh Lankster. Bonner averages 1.8 steals while part of a defense that allows the fourth-fewest points in the nation (50.9) and has held 13 opponents under 50 points.
Adams was also coach of the year in 2013. She has led WSU to four consecutive 20-win seasons, and this year’s 17-1 MVC record matches the best in league history.
