Bob Arens’ three-hit day sparks Shockers

Bob Arens enjoyed a career day Wednesday, helping Wichita State to a 9-2 victory over Arkansas-Little Rock at Eck Stadium.

Arens, a senior from Wichita Northwest, went 3 for 3 with a walk, driving in two runs. He came into the game 2 for 14. The catcher had a two-hit game against Kansas State on May 5, 2011. Friday was the first game he scored two runs and had two RBIs.

With WSU leading 3-2 in the sixth and a runner on first, Jordan Farris hit a one-out double, then Arens doubled to drive in two runs and give the Shockers a 5-2 lead. Tanner Kirk followed with a third consecutve double — WSU’s only extra-base hits.

Jeb Bargfeldt started for WSU, going 3 2/3 innings and allowing three hits. Taylor Goshen (3 1/3) and Chase Williams (2) pitched well in relief. Williams retired six of seven batters he faced, allowing one hit. Goshen yielded three hits and a run, getting nine straight outs at the end of his stint on the mound.

The Shockers amassed 13 hits, their second-best game this season, and their nine runs was their third-best game of the season.

Wichita State’s 10-game homestand continues Friday, when the Shockers play host to UC-Santa Barbara.
