Ellis, Baker, VanVleet named to USBWA All-District team
Wichita State’s junior backcourt of Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet and Kansas forward Perry Ellis were named to the 10-man All-District VI team on Tuesday.
Oklahoma guard Buddy Hield, who played at Sunrise Christian, and Northern Iowa center Seth Tuttle also earned spots on the team, voted on by members of the United States Basketball Writers Association. Tuttle was named Player of the Year and Panthers coach Ben Jacobson Coach of the Year.
District VI includes Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. The USBWA’s All-American team is announced Monday.
VanVleet is a repeat member of the team. He averages 12.7 points and 5.3 assists to lead the Missouri Valley Conference for a second season. Baker averages 15 points and 4.5 rebounds for WSU (28-4).
Ellis, from Heights, averages 14.2 points and 7 rebounds for the Jayhawks (24-7), who play Thursday in the Big 12 Tournament.
Shocker senior honored — Wichita State senior Kelsey Jacobs was named to the Missouri Valley Conference women’s basketball Scholar-Athlete team.
Jacobs, a center from Fortuna, Calif., carries a 4.0 grade-point average in graduate studies in sports management and a 3.74 GPA in exercise science. She was a second-team choice last season.
Junior Alie Decker was named to the second team with a 3.51 GPA in exercise science.
Jacobs averages 8.3 points and 5.1 rebounds and started all 30 games. Decker, from Edmond, Okla., averages 8.8 points and 3.5 rebounds.
WSU junior Michaela Dapprich was named MVC player of the week after averaging 16 points, 7 rebounds and 2.5 steals in wins over Evansville and Indiana State. She recorded her second double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds at Indiana State.
WSU (26-4) opens play in the MVC Tournament at noon Friday in St. Charles, Mo. The top-seeded Shockers play either No. 8 Bradley or No. 9 Loyola.
