Wichita State’s Wessel, Carter chosen for MVC’s Most-Improved Team

Wichita State’s Evan Wessel and Darius Carter were named to the Missouri Valley Conference’s Most-Improved Team on Wednesday.

Wessel, a junior forward, doubled his minutes to 22.1 in 26 starts this season after playing a reserve role last season. He averages 4 points and 3.4 rebounds after averaging 1.2 points and 1.9 rebounds as a sophomore. He is 26 of 76 from three-point range (34.2 percent) after making 3 of 25 last season.

Carter, a senior center, also moved into the starting lineup and increased his production. He averages 11.5 points and 5.4 rebounds after averaging 7.9 points and 4.5 rebounds. He earned All-MVC honorable mention on Tuesday.

Indiana State guard Devonte Brown was named team captain after increasing his scoring average to 12.2 points from 5.2 last season. Drake center Jacob Enevold, Northern Iowa forward Marvin Singleton and Missouri State guard Dorrian Williams also were voted to the team.

Northern Iowa placed guard Wes Washpun and forward Nate Buss on the All-Bench Team. Indiana State guard Tre Bennett, Illinois State guard Bobby Hunter and Evansville forward Mislav Brzoja are also on the team.

The Most-Improved and All-Bench teams are selected by MVC beat writers.
