Tamara Lee sparks Wichita State women to victory over Arkansas State

Jody Adams-Birch looked at her bench 1:12 into the game Friday and pointed at junior guard Tamara Lee. The Shockers trailed Arkansas State 8-0 and needed a spark.

Lee provided it with a career-high 20 points in 37 minutes off the bench in Wichita State’s 69-51 win.

“My teammates just helped me just be patient,” Lee said. Lee made 6 of 13 shots, 5 of 10 from three-point range. “That’s what I’ve been doing and my time will come.”

The Shockers (3-4) have won back-to-back games and play at Missouri next Friday.

Wichita State outscored Arkansas State 20-7 in the final eight minutes of the quarter to lead 20-15. Arkansas State was held scoreless for the final two minutes of the quarter.

The Shocker defense clamped down, taking away open shots that the Red Wolves were getting in the first few minutes. Arkansas State shot 40 percent in the first 10 minutes, but were at 31 percent the remainder of the game.

“We just stuck to our game plan that we practiced all week,” WSU’s TaQuandra Mike said after finishing with 17 points. “We went out there and did what we had to do as a team and for each other.”

Arkansas State began the second quarter on a 9-0 run, but that quickly stopped when Wichita State held the Red Wolves scoreless for the final 4:22 in the half. The Shockers grabbed a 31-28 lead after five straight points from Mike and led 31-29 at half.

The Shockers led 46-40 into the final quarter. Keke Thompson helped shift the tide with a steal and layup, the start of an 8-3 run. Lee made one of her five threes and turned a steal into an assist to Angiee Tompkins.

WSU shot 52 percent and had 15 assists on 28 baskets.

“We talked about staying in our lanes as teammates and as a team,” Adams-Birch said. “It’s really important that we stay in our lanes and stick to what we’re great at. When you stay in your lanes, then you find the other greatness. When you’re patient in the dribble drive and motion offense, then you give the ball and you’re getting wide-open shots.”
